Yorkie care!
Yorkies are pretty smart and so full of energy!
yorkies can sometimes be pretty noisy so be sure you live in a area where this is acceptable.
Groom your pup, long hair can take alot of maintanance .For those of you with busy lifestyles perhaps look into getting a short style from a groomer,keep the nails trimmed, if you don't know how to do this safely please take your pet to a groomer or vet as doing this wrong can be uncomfortable or even hurt your yorkie.
Try to brush your pet regualy as thier hair can get tangled, these little guys only need baths when dirty but with thier energy this may mean once a week depending on your pup. Brushing will keep the hair clean, except on the side of the body where urine collects on a male. Wash there with a damp cloth and warm water.
To remove "tears" or build up around the eye area use a damp cotton ball, if eccessive see your vet.for cleaning ears use an ear cleaning solution for dogs once again with a cotton ball. If this is not removed the mucus can actualy rot your pups hair, so keep an eye on him/her.
Trim the hair on the top third of thier ears untill they are about 6-7 months of age as the fur can wiegh thier ears down before they "set".
Be sure to check your dogs ears for wax and mites also ask your vet to pluck the fur from inside the ears and sometimes the fur from the feet will also need trimming.
Some reccommend giving your dog biscuits and treats that help care for thier teeth also try to brush them when possible.
You can use special bows and rubber bands to help keep your pups fur out thier eyes,remember be gentle, try not to tug on thier fur when putting bows,ect in place.
Yorkies do not have an undercoat to help keep them warm so when it gets chilly don't be afraid to dress them in a small dog coat.
Make sure you buy healthy food full of nutrition as yorkies don't eat very much!
Yorkies don't always get along with other animals so make gentle introductions to new pets.
yorkies may live to be up to 15 years old when taken care of properly!
Try not to brush your dog with a nylon brush as it may break the dogs fur Instead, use a soft comb. If trimming around the eyes PLEASE use blunt tipped scissors to prevent accidents!
Some reccommend that you use good shampoo and conditioner(for people) to assist in getting out tangles and keeping your pup soft and smelling great.
Suprisingly yorkies don't need alot of excersize as they are generaly full of energy. They also make great watch dogs!
